- Ivan J. Coussell, the newsletter editor of “The Littleport Society”, sent this quote from the society's publication “An ABC of Littleport”: "COMMON ACRE: An area to the north of Hale Fen. Now a road off Hale Fen Road called Common Acre Lane. The origins of the name are obscure. HALE FEN: A fen or marsh in the north of the parish, on the northern side of the Old Croft River. It is found as Halewere in 1221, Halywerelak in 1251, and Haleward Lake in 1606. The name is probably derived from the Old English word healh, meaning a nook or corner, thus a weir in the corner or bend in the river. "
