Notes
- According to her son's marriage registry [14] Bessie' last name is also spelled without the “h”.
- From the records listed below, there is strong evidence of the following scenario. Grace Shugg had Bessie Amelia Shugg out of wedlock with William Henry Williams. Grace later married Richard Sara (Sarah) ca. 1866 when Bessie would have been about 3 years old. Bessie therefore has shown up in various records with the maiden name of either “Shugg” or “Sarah”. In either case, it is clear (particularly in the census records) that Richard, although not the biological father, certainly raised Bessie as his own.
