Notes

The following set of documentation leads to the conclusion that Sarah Palmer quietly had Arthur Threader out of wedlock at a very early age:
- 1879 (1 November) Arthur Threader's birth certificate [1] lists his mother as "Sarah Threader (domestic servant)" and does not list a father.
- 1880 (5 May) Arthur Threader has a private baptism [3] and again a father is not listed while Sarah Threader is listed as a single woman.
- 1881 (3 April) Arthur Threader appears in the 1881 census in the household of his grandparents Samuel and Elizabeth Palmer. Of note, Elizabeth Palmer's maiden name was Threader. Although there is no Sarah Threader listed in the household there is an 11 year old daughter named Sarah Palmer.
- 1887 (2 September) Sarah Palmer, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Palmer, marries John Marvel in Stevenage [20].
- 1891 (5 April) Arthur Threader appears in the 1891 census in the home of (now widowed) Elizabeth (née Threader) Palmer, consistent with the 1881 census.
- 1901 (31 March) Arthur Threader appears in the 1901 census in the home of John and Sarah (née Palmer) Marvel. Note that he ought to have been listed as either nephew or son, but instead only as "border".
This suggests that Sarah kept Arthur in her life but there was not overt acknowledgment that he was her son. None of this indicates whether Arthur was aware of who his mother was.
There is some discrepancy in the date that Arthur passed away; although his wife was listed as “Widow” in the 1930 census record, his tombstone lists his death year as 1960. According to his obituary, he passed away on 8 July 1960.
