Notes In his will (signed 6 Feb 1775 and proved 22 May 1775; right before the American Revoution), Samuel writes “It is my particular will and desire that he [his son Samuel] shall approve himself an obedient, kind and loving son to his mother and a tender compassionate brother to my poor Eldest son, and I desire him most earnestly not to sell his Estate or to remove out of these parts, at least so long as his mother lives.” (From [2]): 'Behind this appeal lies the fact that three of his own half-brothers (Adam, John and William) fought in Loyalist units and ended up as exiles in Canada and a fourth half-brother (George) died in a Rebel prison.'
